A Cloak of Red: A Book of Underrealm (The Tenth Kingdom 1) Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 75 ratings

To escape her fate, she must join a hated enemy.

The first in a new series from the #1 bestselling fantasy world of Underrealm.

Theren has only recently left the Academy for Wizards, in full command of her magical powers. But all the spells in the nine kingdoms cannot save her from the fate she fears.

Theren’s patron, Imara, sees her as a possession — a toy to be paraded before other nobles as a symbol of strength. Theren would do nearly anything to escape such a life.

Her resolve is tested when she is offered a position with the Mystics: warriors who serve the High King and serve her ultimate justice. But Theren has suffered punishment and torture from the Mystics in the past, and joins them only with the utmost reluctance.

As war rages across the nation of Underrealm, Theren and her lover, Lilith, must navigate treacherous waters. She will have to make peace with the redcloaks who have harmed her, even as she makes war against the rebels who seek to overthrow the High King.

And deep in the traitorous kingdom of Dulmun, she will discover a plot that could bring everyone she loves to a bloody, violent death…

BEGIN A NEW, EPIC ADVENTURE IN A FANTASY WORLD YOU WON’T EVER WANT TO LEAVE.

Brenna Gawain was born on the same definitely extinct volcano where she still lives today. After spending years of being that child that brought books to family gatherings, everyone was apparently still somehow surprised when she made plans to try and make a career out of writing.

Brenna has a background in almost every kind of art imaginable, from classical music and theatre to writing for videogames and dance. She has studied information technology, archaeology and sound engineering at postgraduate levels, and her passion for writing is as broad as her interests in other fields, ranging from horror to fantasy to science fiction and back again.

There will always be value in stories where characters excel despite other people's misogyny, homophobia, racism, ableism, etc. In young adult fiction/fantasy in particular, I think there's value in showing readers that these obstacles can be overcome. But I also feel there's value in stories where none of these things exist. This was what I found most amazing about A Cloak of Red.

In Brenna's wonderful adventure we see women as soldiers, guards, merchants, politicians, even kings. We're given a charming romance between two brave, inseparable heroines, with references to other f/f and m/m relationships. People of all races and skin colors are included as key characters instead of stereotypes. And not only do we meet a skilled battle mage who is Deaf and uses sign language to communicate, we learn that *everyone* in their culture learns and practices sign language. And all of these things are treated as normal by the characters and cultures. Excellent inclusion and representation.

Being introduced to Brennan writing in the Chronicles, I had expected a good tale. This first book of the Tenth Kingdom series is marvelous! Capturing the Theren that we all came to love in the Academy Journals perfectly, along with the inimitable Lillith, this book is a worthy addition to the world of Underrealm.
Thank you, Brenna Gawain for a truly enjoyable tale. Underrealm is richer for your being here.

An excellent debut novel for this author. A great expansion to the world of Underrealm detailing the adventures of Theren and Lilith after they leave the Academy. I can't wait to read the next one.

Very fun and adventurous! Growing characters in a changing world trying to survive the dangers before them

I have so many FEELS about this book. I’ve followed Garrett and the works of Underrealm for several years now, and he’s always made it explicitly clear that he wanted to have other other authors writing in his world one day. We got a taste of that in the Chronicles, but ACoR is the first full-length Underrealm novel written by an external author.

In a word, it’s amazing. When we last saw Theren, she had undergone a great trauma at the hands of the Mystics, had made up with her partner Lilith, and was expelled from Academy of Wizards on the Seat. While we’ve seen much from her in the Academy Journals, ACoR let’s us see through Theren’s eyes, and peek into her mind, and I can’t understate how well it was handled. She’s undoubtedly the same Theren, but we get to see her the way she sees herself, not filtered through Ebon’s gaze, and we get to see how she’s recovering from her own trauma.

The worldbuilding is as excellent as I would expect from any Underrealm book; the characters were so true to their original appearances that they could have been written by Garrett; the plot is phenomenal, and leaves me burning for the next book. All in all, this is a book of Underrealm, no matter who wrote it. Brenna brings her own style to the world, but it is undoubtedly Underrealm.

Without going into too much detail, this also opens up a new facet of Underrealm that we’ve never seen before, a comfortable romance. The other romances in the series are either newly formed, while Lilith and Theren have had years to find a comfortable rhythm and private jokes. It’s a level of comfortable affection that none of the other relationships in the series have reached yet, and it’s such a heartwarming read.

What If Harry Potter and Ginny got expelled from Hogwarts and was forced to join a magical military. New Underrealm author, Brenna Gawain does something similar to this with A Cloak of Red. And I mean that in the most positive way possible.

After the life-changing events in The Academy Journals trilogy, Theren is a young woman on the run. Promised to a life of servitude to her patron after her time at the Academy for Wizards, she’s desperate to avoid the humiliating life of a court magician. But when she’s caught by the Mystic order, she’s given a way out, and it’s a chance that maybe worst than being reclaimed by her patron: join the Mystic order—the very people who tortured her in the past.

What’s great about this book is the relationship between Theren and Lilith. I love functional relationships in novels. I love dysfunctional relationships too, but those are more common. And Gawain has a fantastic way of writing bright-eyed naivety without making the characters feel stupid or, worse, talking down to the reader.

I personally feel like the plot of this story isn’t as strong as the characters, it still drives along without feeling like the story is dragging. I think it could be an issue of misaligned expectations. Whether I missed the signposts or not, I thought the story was going in one direction, but around the middle of the story, it took a different turn. Still, it gives the sequel a platform for an even grander plot, and that has me excited.

If you’re as deep into Underrealm as I am, this is a must-read. But if you’re simply looking for a starting point for Underrealm, this novel can be that for you as well. You can jump in without any foreknowledge.

*Full Disclosure — I work for the publisher, but I wasn't paid to review this book. While this is an honest review, I was involved in the production of the audiobook, and I receive a small royalty for purchases of the audiobook version*

I won't lie, I had given up on reading books for awhile after growing bored with the same old tropes in other fantasy books emulating lotr.

Then the cover caught my eye and I hoped it was of the main character (it is!!!) instead of the trope of darker skin=bad. Not only did my fears evaporate after the first chapter I was in love with main cast and the storyline.

I do not wish to spoil anything so all I can say now is please do yourself a favour and read this book! I mean while will be getting every other underealms book I can ❤

A well paced story that kept me intrested all the way through. Though I now realise this is the latest book in the series, so I'm excited to go back in time and gain more context for these fascinating characters I've now been introduced to.

Fantastic! A Cloak of Red is a fine addition to the world of Underrealm. I had initial concerns about a second author writing characters that Garrett had already brought to life, but Brenna has accomplished it flawlessly. I anxiously await book two!!
