Editorial Reviews

Review

"We have to get these stories out to the children. We cannot let this legacy die! Wonderfully told!" -- E.B. Lewis, Coretta Scot King Award winning children's book illustrator

"... lively and moving account of Mumbet's impressive life."-- John Sedgwick, In My Blood

From the Inside Flap

Mumbet was born a slave but she did not die a slave. After more than 30 years of bondage, she lived free for nearly 50 years. Like the best stories, Mumbet's life illuminates what one woman, man or child can accomplish when the human heart refuses to accept injustice. Mumbet, in having the courage to speak what was in her heart and the resolve to follow through, was able to change the course of history.

My son and I had to rush a pick a book to read for a biography project at school. He wanted to do one on slavery and I searched kindle and this one was recommended. We didn't know anything about mumbet, but by the end of the story we had fallen in love.

My son is of mixed heritage. This book presented slavery in way which helps him understand what happened back then, while showing him people like the Sedgwicks who helped mumbet gain her freedom!

I would recommend this book for 3rd-5th graders, and even some of us adults who don't know the story of mumbet and how she sued for her freedom well before slavery was officially over.

This is a charming a well written biography that reads like a novel. Young readers of any age and background will love reading about Mumbet, a touching and courageous figure from American history . New Englanders especially will be fascinated to read about this freed New England slave whose life is part of the little known story of blacks in colonial New England. I think that the best way for children (9 years old and up) to learn about American History is through novels and biographies such as this one. The pictures in the book are also charming. The book is an easy read but is also educational, its a shame that schools don't assign more books like this to read as part of the history curriculum.

this is a tremendous story of how one african american slave used the constitution (which was at the time reserved for white, landowning, upper-class men) to emancipate herself from the legal institution of slavery. slavery is a horrific chapter in our history with far too many stories of unbelievable brutality. yet these authors are able to brilliantly capture an uplifting and important historical moment that provides a glimpse of justice triumphing momentarily in what were otherwise very unjust and immoral times. the story of mumbet is one that must be remembered, and the authors have ensured this will happen by making the book accessible and engaging to children and adults of all ages.

This was an incredible, inspirational, historical story that was very easy to read. My ten year old enjoyed it very, very much. We chose this for a book report but this is the type of book every little girl should read. It demonstrated determination and the faithful positive spirit every girl and woman can have even in the face of difficulty. When I read it, I couldn't put it down until I was done. Every library should carry multiple copies of this so everyone has the opportunity to read it, not just those who can purchase it.

A favorite of my classes over the years. A great introduction to the realities of slavery, persistence, and smarts. A wonderful tribute to woman who had incredible impact on the slaves of Berkshire County, the surrounding communities and Massachusetts.

Loved this short tale of this courageous lady! We all should try and learn from her tenacious attitude to not ever give up. Those poor souls plight! Proud that Massachusetts was a state to start with abolishing such cruelty.
