When Truth No Longer Matters Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 16 ratings

As Christmas 2003 approached we excitedly awaited the arrival of our second child. After two traumatic miscarriages and the heartache that had followed, we apprehensively awaited a much longed for sibling for our young son and an end to the difficult and arduous pregnancy that had left me covered in bruises, itching constantly and suffering from pre-eclamsia.

In the early days of 2004 our world would be turned on its axis and instead of welcoming our new addition we would be accused of shaking him and left fighting to keep both our children in the legal battle of a lifetime.

The long two year struggle through the Family Court and subsequent five year journey, filled with a roller-coaster of health scares and moments of self-doubt, would eventually lead us to the true cause of my youngest son's brain haemorrhage. The reason why we had been ordered to move out of our own home and spend every hour, sick with worry, came as suddenly as the accusations themselves had done. It was then we realised that if it could be us, it could be anyone.

We do not seek to apportion blame on anyone, we do not seek retribution, we seek the truth - for all.

About the Author

Heather Toomey is an IT Network Manager from Buxton, Derbyshire, who loves to play music and dance. She lives with her motorbike obsessed husband and two children, the eldest being more of a natural writer than she ever was and her youngest who is so energetic it tires you out watching him. Her West Highland Terrier, Mac, is never far behind any of them and especially close when food is on offer! She has written her book to raise awareness of the number of families accused of abusing their child by shaking - unproven accusations that are difficult to bear and impossible to defend.

This book is well written and editted. There are no words to describe the horrors this family went through to stay together, courtesy of abuses of power and authority. It's a quick read, and the author made it "easy" on the reader, I think. It's like we get to read what her family went through without having to actually feel like we're living in the nightmare. Kudos for the style, in that regard.

Ms. Toomey, I can only imagine what this was actually like for you, even after reading this book. I felt exhausted just sitting and reading about the hurdles your family jumped and the hoops your family went through to keep custody of your children, who never should have been cast under suspicion in the first place. If the testing you spoke of had been completed years previous, the resources of a broken system could have gone to someone who needed them. There are so many others who have gone through similar circumstances, and not all of them got an end result like yours. Thank you for publishing this book and sharing your experiences to highlight the cracks and outright pot holes in the system that's supposed to protect children, not abuse them.

5.0 out of 5 stars perhaps a wakeup call

I found this book quite a revelation as those of you who read it surely will. How any body of workers council/health or otherwise could subject a family to that kind of mental agony and pressure without any rhyme or reason beggars belief.
This only enforces the feeling that people only see what they want to see and not what really happens, the birth of this little boy was very traumatic for both mother and baby and which was not revisited until much later. I was so pleased that in the end common sense prevailed and the powers that be realised that this was and is a very happy family unit for all what the state threw at them, and that they subjected this family to needless stress and heartache which will stay with them for a long time, for which somehow I don't think they would have received an apology . I hope this story will inspire others to stand up and fight their corner if they ever find themselves in the same situation.

This is a book written by a mother (and father I would think), with warmth and balance, who must have been through hell and back. Their courage and compliance with the System is laudable and leaves one with the feeling that had they been less compliant and more aggressive the System would have left them alone, but as it was they were a very easy target, wanting only to keep their children safe. I have often felt that to be accused of a crime you have not committed must be one of the worst kinds of nightmare. I would like to say to 'unconvincing' by PG - this is real life not a novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars this could be any one of us

I could not put this down. I think the Toomey families experience shows up how much we could all be in the firing line for this treatment - changes are needed desperately, the toomeys strength is testiment to them coming through this though i know will be so badly scarred by the injustice they have been dealt. More and more we are seeing families torn apart, clearly the wrong ones! and missing the boat on the ones that do need help. We should all read this, take not and stand up against those allegedly in charge and strive to stop this happening time and time again. And those in these jobs for clearly the wrong reasons need hunted!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars An eye opener on Child Protection...

This is an excellent account of how Child Protection by local authorities can get skewed and pushed in a dangerous direction by well meaning social workers who lose sight of the bigger picture. It is well-written and kept me reading even though you know from the outset the ending is a happy one. I honestly don't know how Heather and her husband stayed same through a terrible ordeal. Somehow the love of their children got them through it. It was worthwhile and I found out a lot about the law and family courts and just how miscarriages of justice can happen to anyone.
