5.0 out of 5 stars Thought provoking, enjoyable, fascinating
Fascinating book, full of insights into people's experiences living in different parts of the world after leaving the UK. One of the stories that I think will stick with me is the anecdote from the woman who talked of moving to South Africa during the apartheid regime, and her horror at the way black people were treated - she was then treated like a pariah by other whites after inviting a black woman inside her home to use her bathroom. Sobering reading in places. Interesting accounts of people who've moved away from the UK to live in different parts of the world. Thought provoking, enjoyable, and guaranteed to make most of us feel like we've lived really boring lives!

5.0 out of 5 stars an enjoyable read
A few things I enjoyed about this book. It's all about peoples different stories for moving abroad, not just 'leaving' the UK but more about going on an adventure and taking the opportunity to try living in a different country. Also, I like that all the stories and people interview are so very different with lots of different personalities... and I love that all the stores are short, easy to read and from very different personal perspectives. A great gift book for anyone planning to up sticks and move, regardless of where they are moving from and to.

4.0 out of 5 stars An interesting read
Having left my home country in 1996 and since then having worked and lived in 4 different countries I was interested in these stories. Personally, I am not sure whether to stay in the UK or to move on. The stories include quite a mixture of different people with different reasons. Highly recommended for people who just want to give it a try

4.0 out of 5 stars Captures the good, the bad, and the ugly of life abroad.
In this collection of interviews with multiple British expats, Tom Beck exposes the reader not only to different cultures but also the myriad of reasons people leave their birth country. Using verbatim transcripts of hours of phone calls, Beck captures the good, the bad, and the ugly of life abroad. The book is deftly compartmentalized in categories, such as exciting adventures, broken hearts, disappointments, and even the struggles of some to return home. This format works well as common threads are exposed.
At first, the non-edited structure found me searching for answers that could have been included with a few guidance questions. Sometimes referents aren't clear, time periods aren't noted, and tales abruptly end rather than conclude neatly. However, I found myself drawn to this free-flowing format as the book progressed. The candid nature of the discussions and, in some cases, brutal honesty, really put me 'inside' the experiences of the expats. I was left with a sense of loss that Brexit has deprived many of the ability to up and leave for a European experience on a whim. The book is well-formatted (though a professional proofread would have been helpful) and the cover design is a great representation of the contents. Well worth a read for anyone thinking of leaving Britain for foreign experiences.
Note: My story is included in this book. However, I purchased my copy retail, received no compensation for my contribution, and receive no royalties from sales.

5.0 out of 5 stars I kept saying 'I'll just read another person's story ...' Very addictive!
Fascinating read for those who have lived abroad, those who are thinking of living abroad, and even those who have no plans to ever live abroad. Each person's story is just a couple of pages long so it's very easy to pick up when you have just a few minutes spare. I read it in bed and kept saying 'I'll just read another one.' It was quite addictive. I have lived abroad myself so it was interesting to compare my experiences with everyone else's.
