Beyond Redemption: Love and Longing in the Old West (Beyond Redemption Series Book 1) Kindle Edition
What People Say...
“This book is a time machine that transports you to a world of daring robberies, gunfights, and a love story that’s as complicated as it is heartwarming.”
“Historical accuracy mixed with an incredible tale that will leave you begging to turn the pages to read more and more. The story is paced perfectly. It pulls you in and doesn’t let you go.”
May 11th, 1889 in the Arizona Territory…
When the U.S. Army Payroll is robbed by a group of Mormon settlers, one man’s life is changed forever. After a bloody gunfight, the bandits escape with nearly thirty-thousand dollars in gold, which was never recovered.
Cal Chandler, an unwilling participant in the crime, is forced to flee, running from the law and his Mormon roots. Already conflicted over the Mormon practice of polygamy, his life becomes more complex when he falls for the lovely but outspoken Jessica Lorena McKenzie. The two could not be more different; he was raised Mormon, and she is a born-again Christian. Their relationship results in Cal being confronted with a profound reappraisal of his understanding of God.
Will love go unrequited? Is there any future for a wanted man? Suffering from self-condemnation, he considers himself a man beyond redemption. But is he? Miss McKenzie doesn’t think so, but she doesn’t know what Cal knows: He is wanted for the most notorious crime in the territory.
In Beyond Redemption, readers are transported back to the Wild West, as author Mark Swarbrick brings to life a thrilling adventure of love, justice, and redemption. With its attention to historical detail, action-packed western scenes, and godly character values, readers will find themselves captivated by its authenticity, realism, and suspense.
This historical novel – with details based on actual events – has plenty of action: gunfights, stage robberies, and holdups, but more than that, it presents life and death, love and longing, against a backdrop of the struggle between good and evil in the Wild West.
If you enjoy James Michener’s attention to historical detail, Louis L'Amour’s action westerns, and the godly character values reflected by Laura Ingalls Wilder, then you will love Beyond Redemption, an account that takes you back in time to see the people of the Wild West as they actually were.

Will his past catch up with him?

- Reviewed in the United States on November 8, 2023This historical fiction novel covers an event in our country’s history that I was completely unaware of- the armed robbery of an Army Paymaster gold shipment in Arizona, committed by a group of Mormons. Facts about the robbery and ensuing trials are carefully documented in an easy-to-read format, as well as fascinating details about what life was like at that time in the rugged west, in the late 1800’s.
While the main theme of the book is serious- salvation is only found in Jesus Christ, not through man-inspired ideas and deceptions – there are plenty of adventurous and lighthearted moments that carry the plot forward. Complete with a feisty heroine and an engaging young miner who saves the day, this story has that old-time western vibe that John Wayne fans will enjoy!
Highly recommend, both for those with questions about Mormon history and beliefs, and for anyone who just enjoys a good read.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 14, 2023I found “Beyond Redemption” to be a very enjoyable and educational read. Through facts and descriptive language, the author weaves a very interesting story about life in the 1800's in addition to the Mormon way of life. The characters are very realistic and the author presents them in a way that is very relatable. I wasn't sure what to expect when I first started reading the book but I quickly became captivated by the locations, the characters and the varied directions of the plot which all came together beautifully. The book is an excellent read!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 1, 2023This novel seems like a riveting true story and indeed it reeks of authenticity. The author is clearly very knowledgeable about Arizona and the way he weaves the various locales into the story is part of what makes it seem so real. I do wonder where truth meets fiction.
The preface is not to be missed as it sets the tone of the book.
To be sure this book is about good and evil and how significant segments of Mormons are led astray by an evil or at the least misguided man and end up doing the evil one’s work, especially as seen in their attack and murder of a group of black soldiers tasked with guarding a load of gold as it makes its way through the mountains and the consequences of that raid.
I think you will be edified by the way the author twists and turns the plot during the rest of the book!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 8, 2023The author does a wonderful job of blending history of the old west with a intriguing look at how religion played a hand in how even the roughest of the settlors lived. The history is well told and the love story blends in nicely and keeps the story moving. Even the difficulty that race relations played is examined here throughout the story. The characters are introspective and helps the reader see a side of the old west rarely told. All in all a fast moving read and one that leaves the reader wiser by the end.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 23, 2023Beyond Redemption is a stunning story of the old west that portrays the way things were. Racism, religious factions, violence, and corruption existed in the old west but so did personal integrity, loyalty, fealty to duty, respect, love, and mercy. All of this based on historical facts. If you love a story with strong characters in a struggle to find the truth and redemption then this book is for you!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 14, 2023A gripping journey through the Arizona Territory, seamlessly blending history and fiction. Mark Swarbrick's meticulous attention to detail immerses readers in the Wild West's tumultuous landscape. The complex tale of Cal Chandler, entangled in a Mormon-led robbery, unfolds with a perfect balance of action and emotion. Swarbrick skillfully explores the clash between good and evil, intertwining a love story that transcends religious boundaries. The narrative's authenticity is enhanced by vivid descriptions of locales and historical events. With twists that keep you on edge, this novel offers a compelling exploration of redemption, leaving readers pondering the thin line between salvation and the choices we make. Highly recommended for history enthusiasts and those seeking a captivating Western tale with depth.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 15, 2023A very well-written book with deep levels to the characters but I must admit by the advertising I thought it would be more western gun slinger, very heavy emphasis on Christianity and could be triggering at some points as it does include N word (with an explanation) but honestly could have been left out, which is just my opinion
- Reviewed in the United States on November 25, 2023This captivating and sincere tale provides a distinct outlook on Christian love within the backdrop of the Old West. It's a captivating choice for readers intrigued by religious history, romance, and the influence of faith on individual identities. Despite its imperfections, the book triumphs in delivering an uplifting and contemplative storyline.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
The characters in this book were multifaceted and incredibly relatable. They felt like real people, each with their own complexities, strengths, and flaws. I found myself emotionally invested in their journeys, celebrating their triumphs, and commiserating with them during their challenges. It's a testament to the author's skill that they were able to breathe such life into their creations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book and story
I loved this historical fiction, the pictures in it, the writing, everything in fact. It is rare you come across a book where an author took such meticulous care with it and their craft in writing. Loved the pictures in it. The research was really well done and referenced. It is written in easy to read and very compelling style. Beautifully written in fact. This book is much more than it appears. Perfect for historical fiction lovers set in the old west as well as anyone who just loves a realistic type fiction that absorbs you into that world.
