Pilgrim’s Progress (Parts 1 & 2): Updated, Modern English. More than 100 Illustrations. (Bunyan Updated Classics) Kindle Edition

Bonus - Includes Parts 1 & 2

Often disguised as something that would help him, evil accompanies Christian on his journey to the Celestial City. As you walk with him, you’ll begin to identify today’s many religious pitfalls. These are presented by men such as Pliable, who turns back at the Slough of Despond; and Ignorance, who believes he’s a true follower of Christ when he’s really only trusting in himself. Each character represented in this allegory is intentionally and profoundly accurate in its depiction of what we see all around us, and unfortunately, what we too often see in ourselves. But while Christian is injured and nearly killed, he eventually prevails to the end. So can you.

The best part of this book is the Bible verses added to the text. The original
Pilgrims Progress listed the Bible verse references, but the verses themselves are so impactful when tied to the scenes in this allegory, that they are now included within the text of this book. The text is tweaked just enough to make it readable today, for the young and the old. Youngsters in particular will be drawn to the original illustrations included in this wonderful classic.

A must read CLASSIC in a nicely done Hardcover
I added a lot of photos to this review because often it's hard to tell how large a book is, what the size is, and how the printing and images look. Hope this helps you. While this is a modern written version it's still wonderful. It's a decent hard cover version I got on sale. This book probably won't last 200 years like my 1823 version has, but it's nice for the price. It has both volumes that were written with the second explaining what happened to Christian's Wife and Kids.It has plenty of the old photos sprinkled throughout. It's a decent copy for those who want an easy read or gift to someone. This is One of the most powerful books ever penned next to the Bible I've ever read. Comparing both Modern English and old English versions there is a stark difference. I know many people don't like old English but in my personal opinion it's far more beautifully written. I plan on also buying the unabridged version to read it the way Bunyan wrote it. The old English version is very much like reading something from William Shakespeare. But this modern version is an easy read for those who want something familiar. Either way it's a classic and a MUST READ! If you haven't read this book stick it on your bucket list but read it NOW and not later. It can change your life.

Deep read but so worth it. Very eye opening. It speaks of our Christian journey perfectly. So very encouraging. Keep your eyes on the prize.

Bunyan successfully gave a faithful account of a Christian’s journey. Many, if not all, of Christian’s encounters were highly relatable. The highest strength of this book (and what I loved the most about it) is its deep roots in the Scriptures. I do not exaggerate when I say there’s a corresponding bible verse for every other sentence in Pilgrim’s Progress. I was profoundly impressed by Bunyan’s extensive knowledge of Scriptures and his ability to infuse it throughout his book.

Charles Spurgeon even called Bunyan a living Bible and said, “Read anything of his [Bunyan’s], and you will see that it is almost like reading the Bible itself. He had read it till his very soul was saturated with Scripture…prick him anywhere; his blood is Bibline; the very essence of the Bible flows from him. He cannot speak without quoting a text, for his very soul is full of the Word of God.”

Not only is Pilgrim’s Progress filled with Scriptures, but it is also faithful to it. It gives a clear and accurate presentation of the Gospel of Christ, not a watered version popular in the evangelical world today.

I also enjoyed the biblical lessons in every stage of the book. Even when Christian encountered troubles I hadn’t, I learned a few things that will help recognize the enemy's trap. And I also enjoyed the poetry/song Christian recited at the end of every trial.

On the flip side, I found the book a bit difficult to read. I can easily spend hours reading a book, but for some reason, I couldn’t read more than a chapter per day with this one. Perhaps it is because of the different writing style or because it was written a long time ago. Whatever the case, it was not a can’t-put-it-down book for me. But it's probably for the best, as it allowed me to digest the material slowly.

Nevertheless, I enjoyed the book. It made me reflect on my faith journey and examine myself. It also provided me with valuable resources to keep me on the true path of righteousness.

For instance, Christian’s sole focus on God convicted me and made me realize I let myself get too distracted by worldly things instead of fixing my eyes on Christ. Also, the sufficiency of Scripture for all of Christian’s troubles inspired me. And I was enormously encouraged by how Christian and his fellow resisted a specific obstacle and the means they used to overcome it.

    My recommendation
Pilgrim’s Progress is for the everyday Christian, as it depicts general things all believers can expect from the moment we have been regenerated to when we die and go to heaven.

Therefore, I recommend all Christians to read it! Especially new believers. The book is so theologically rich that I cannot imagine any Christian reading it without learning something that will grow them in their faith.

Non-Christians should also read it because it is an excellent introduction to the Christian life. However, as it doesn’t have much apologetics, non-believers who are skeptical but warm towards Christianity might benefit from it.

TL;DR: Read if you like allegories and are Christian.

Read this edition, it is updated into Modern English with Scripture references included. FYI, there is one printing that uses the Jubilee Bible and another that uses the NASB.

I want to go back and make a deep study of this book. Though it is an allegory there is something here for every Pilgrim as they walk along the way.

I have loved the story of Pilgrim's Progress since I was a child. Not to give away anything of the plot, twists or turns and spoil the book for anyone who has not had the chance to enjoy reading the book for themselves yet, Pilgrim's Progress in simplest terms is an allegory (a story, poem, or picture that can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning, typically a moral or political one) of the spiritual journey Christian goes on as he makes a decision to follow Jesus Christ.
Pilgrim's Progress was written and published in the 1670's and if you read the book in it's original language it can be challenging at times with understanding Old English. I appreciated having the language of the book updated to make the book more accessible to this century. I was slightly perplexed though by the choice of Bible translations. I had never before heard of the Jubilee Bible but it is written in a similar style of the King James Bible putting its language form and style similar to Old English. There are so many other good translations that they could have chosen with updated Modern English but failed to do so. If you are going to update a book to Modern English, it needs to be done consistently throughout and include all the Scripture quoted throughout the book. The Scripture (Bible) is key to the telling of the story and to keep it in a style of English (Old 1600-1700's) that is difficult for most to understand today is a huge fault on the part of those who updated the book. If you are wanting to read Pilgrim's Progress that has been updated in it's entirety, this is not the one for you. I would recommend looking for a young adult copy of the book that would more apt to have its entire language update throughout. However, all the Bible references are provided and you could look them up in a more modern translation as you read the book if you needed some clarification on what the Bible verses are saying throughout the book.
Even with this fault, this is a book that I highly recommend for everyone to read. It is one that I have on my bookshelf, on my kindle and on DVD and one I will not be selling or donating to make room something else.

Another book added to my library (kindle), at a very good price. It would be churlish to refuse...This is book 1 & 2, to which I added 3,4 & 5, all for the reasonable price of £0.99. I haven't started it yet, but will fit it in and hopefully glean some knowledge and understanding. That's the idea anyway. It is given a lot of plaudits, and I'm sure it will be worth the read.
